Career Highlights: Made racing headlines in 1976 at the age of 16 by winning 240 races, a record for an apprentice jockey...The next year, his 487 winning rides and $6 million in purse earnings set new records, and landed him on the cover of Sports Illustrated twice, plus led to three Eclipse Awards: one for outstanding apprentice jockey, one for outstanding jockey and another, the prestigious Award of Merit...In 1978, at age 18, he became the youngest jockey to win racings Triple Crown, riding Affirmed to three exciting wins over Alidar in one of the sports greatest rivalries...Moved his tack to Europe in 1979, where he was three times the leading rider in England in 1984, 1985 and 1987...The only rider to win five major Derbys: the Kentucky Derby on Affirmed (1978); Englands Epsom Derby with Slip Anchor (1985) and Reference Point (1987); the French Derby on Old Vic (1989); the Irish Derby with Old Vic (1989) and the Italian Derby on Halisham (1991)...Became the youngest person ever inducted into horse racings Hall of Fame in 1994. |
